Gravity-Fed Heating System Converted to a Modern Vaillant Combi Boiler in Portsmouth

Our latest project involved helping a homeowner upgrade an ageing heating system that had reached the point where it no longer met the needs of the property or the family living there. The customer contacted us because they wanted a more efficient, reliable and modern heating system while also reclaiming the valuable cupboard space taken up by the existing hot water cylinder.

The property was fitted with an older Baxi boiler operating on a traditional gravity-fed system. This included a large copper hot water cylinder, a cold water storage tank in the loft and the associated gravity-fed pipework. While these systems have served homes well for many years, they are becoming increasingly inefficient compared to modern heating systems. They also rely on stored hot water, meaning once the cylinder is emptied, you have to wait for it to reheat before more hot water is available.

After discussing the customer’s requirements and carrying out a full survey of the existing installation, we recommended converting the property to a modern Vaillant combination boiler. The customer wanted a heating system that would deliver hot water instantly, improve energy efficiency, reduce running costs and simplify the overall installation by removing unnecessary tanks and cylinders.

The installation began by safely isolating the gas, water and electrical supplies before draining down the existing heating system. We carefully removed the old Baxi boiler, the copper hot water cylinder, redundant pipework and associated heating components. The cold water storage tank and any obsolete feed and expansion tanks were also removed, allowing us to completely eliminate the gravity-fed system.

With the old equipment removed, we prepared the pipework for the new installation. Some of the existing pipework was modified and upgraded where necessary to suit the new pressurised heating system. Every installation is different, and we always take the time to ensure pipework is neat, well supported and designed for long-term reliability as well as ease of future maintenance.

The new Vaillant combi boiler was then installed in a more practical position, providing a clean and modern appearance while making the best use of the available space. We fitted the necessary magnetic system filter to help protect the boiler and heating system from circulating debris, helping to maintain efficiency and extend the lifespan of key components. The condensate pipework, pressure relief discharge, flue system and controls were all installed in accordance with current regulations and manufacturer specifications.

Once the installation was complete, the heating system was thoroughly flushed, filled and pressurised before being treated with high-quality corrosion inhibitor. We then carried out comprehensive commissioning checks, tested the gas supply, combustion performance, heating operation and domestic hot water production to ensure everything was operating safely and efficiently. Finally, we registered the installation with the relevant authorities and talked the customer through the new boiler controls so they felt confident using their new heating system.

The benefits of converting from a gravity-fed system to a combination boiler are significant. The customer now enjoys instant hot water directly from the mains without relying on stored water in a cylinder. They have regained a large amount of airing cupboard space, no longer need the cold water storage tank in the loft, and have a heating system that is considerably more efficient than the one it replaced. With fewer components, there is also less equipment to maintain, making the system simpler and more reliable for years to come.

At the end of the project, the transformation was immediately noticeable. What was once a cupboard occupied by a bulky copper cylinder and ageing equipment is now home to a compact, neatly installed Vaillant combi boiler, providing a modern, efficient and reliable heating solution that better suits the customer’s lifestyle.
