Can You Really Unblock a Toilet with Plastic Wrap?

Yes—sometimes.

The idea behind this method is simple. By creating an airtight seal over the toilet bowl, the pressure generated when you flush helps force the blockage through the trap.

Think of it as turning the whole toilet into a giant plunger.

It’s most effective on soft blockages caused by excessive toilet paper or waste. It won’t solve problems caused by wet wipes, sanitary products, children’s toys or blocked drains further down the pipework.

What You’ll Need

• Strong cling film (plastic wrap) or heavy-duty packing tape

• Kitchen towel to dry the toilet rim

• Rubber gloves (recommended)

Step 1 – Don’t Keep Flushing

If the toilet bowl is already full, avoid repeatedly flushing.

Every additional flush risks overflowing the toilet and causing water damage.

Allow the water level to settle before attempting any repair.

Step 2 – Dry the Rim

Using kitchen towel, thoroughly dry the entire rim of the toilet.

A dry surface helps the plastic wrap or tape stick properly and creates an airtight seal.

Step 6 – Apply Gentle Pressure

Using both hands, gently press down on the centre of the inflated plastic wrap.
