Commercial Gas Services in Portsmouth — Quick Overview

Commercial gas services cover the servicing, planned maintenance, condition assessment, repair, and safety-focused inspections of gas appliances and pipework on business premises — including commercial kitchens, commercial boilers, catering equipment, and other gas-fired plant. Dv Plumbing and Gas Services provides this service to business operators, hospitality premises, facilities managers, and property managers across the South Coast.

Key facts for business enquiries:

  • Who this is for: Business owners, operators, and facilities teams managing commercial or communal gas appliances on non-residential or mixed-use premises

  • Gas Safe registration: Commercial gas work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer holding the relevant commercial work categories for the appliances and premises involved — not all Gas Safe engineers are registered for commercial work

  • Service scope (confirmed at enquiry): Commercial boiler servicing, commercial appliance inspection, commercial gas pipework inspection, gas tightness testing, commercial catering gas equipment servicing, and planned maintenance programmes — confirmed individually by appliance type

  • Not covered here: Domestic boiler servicing, residential landlord gas certificates (see landlord gas safety certificates), emergency plumbing, or unrelated building services

  • First step: Contact us with your premises type, appliance list, and location — we confirm scope and qualification fit before quoting

Four Business Situations Where This Service Applies

Commercial gas services are a broad term. Here's who typically contacts us — and what they're looking for.

Hospitality and Catering Operators:
Restaurants, pubs, hotels, cafes, and takeaways running gas-fired catering equipment need commercial catering gas maintenance by engineers who are both Gas Safe registered and specifically competent for that appliance type. Commercial kitchen gas equipment — ranges, fryers, ovens, salamanders, and associated pipework — has specific servicing requirements that differ significantly from a domestic boiler visit. If your establishment has gas catering appliances and no current service record, this is where to start.

Property Managers and Facilities Teams:
Commercial property managers, facilities management companies, and building owners responsible for gas plants — commercial boilers, central heating systems, or shared services in office buildings, retail units, or multi-occupancy commercial premises — need a commercial gas maintenance contractor who understands scope, documentation requirements, and how to work within operational constraints. We're used to coordinating with facilities teams rather than individual homeowners.

Care Homes and Healthcare Premises:
Care homes, sheltered accommodation with communal gas appliances, and similar premises have specific gas maintenance obligations that go beyond domestic requirements. Managing those appliances — commercial boilers, catering equipment, communal heating — requires an engineer who understands the setting and the type of documentation expected from a visit.

Retail, Office, and Warehouse Premises:
Retail units, office buildings, and warehouse facilities with a gas-fired heating plant or process equipment need periodic servicing and condition assessment. Commercial gas servicing for these premises is straightforward in concept but often delayed simply because the right contractor hasn't been identified. If you have a gas appliance on your premises and no current maintenance arrangement, get in touch, and we'll confirm whether it falls within our scope.

Process

From First Contact to Signed-Off Service Record

Commercial gas work doesn't start at the visit — it starts at the enquiry. Here's how the process works with Dv Plumbing and Gas Services

01

Enquiry and Premises Information

When you contact us, we'll ask for: your premises type and location, the gas appliances requiring servicing (type, make, and model where known), any existing service history or last-visit records, your operational hours and any access or downtime constraints, and whether you have any current concerns about appliance performance or gas safety. This isn't form-filling for its own sake — it's the information that determines whether the scope is within our verified competence and what the visit will involve.

02

Scope Confirmation and Quote

Based on the information you provide, we confirm whether the work is within our registered and competent scope, which engineer is appropriate for the appliance types involved, and what the visit is likely to cover. We provide a commercial gas engineer quote based on this scoped understanding — not a generic hourly rate applied to an unknown job. If additional information or a preliminary site visit would improve the accuracy of the quote, we'll say so.

03

Scheduling Around Your Operations

Commercial gas visits are scheduled around your business hours and any operational constraints — we don't assume a Monday morning works for a hospitality business open until midnight on Sunday. Access requirements, key contacts, and any specific entry procedures are confirmed before the visit is arranged.

04

The Service Visit

The engineer arrives, reviews the agreed scope, and carries out the service in line with the relevant appliance manufacturer requirements, Gas Safe guidance, and applicable HSE standards. Any condition outside normal parameters — a safety device not performing as expected, pipework showing signs of deterioration, a ventilation concern — is noted at the time and included in the report. Nothing outside the agreed scope is carried out without your prior approval.

05

Service Report and Follow-Up

At the end of the visit, you receive a commercial gas service report documenting what was inspected, tested, and found. Any recommended follow-up actions — repairs, further investigation, or a return visit — are clearly identified with the reasoning behind the recommendation. You are not left with a signed certificate and no explanation of what it covers.

Why DV Plumbing

Why Commercial Gas Work Requires More Than a Gas Safe Card

This is the question that separates an informed buyer from one who makes an expensive mistake. The answer is specific and worth reading in full.

A Gas Safe registered engineer can carry out gas work — but only the work categories listed on their individual ID card. A domestic Gas Safe engineer is registered for domestic work. An engineer registered for commercial work carries different categories on their card. An engineer registered for commercial catering gas equipment specifically must hold the correct competency for that appliance type.

The Gas Safe Register itself is clear on this: customers should ask to see the engineer's Gas Safe ID card and verify that the listed categories match the work being carried out on their premises. You can also verify an engineer's registration and work categories directly at gassaferegister.co.uk/find-an-engineer-or-check-the-register/.

What this means for business operators: If an engineer arrives at your commercial kitchen, services your catering appliances, and their Gas Safe ID card does not include the relevant commercial catering categories — that work has not been carried out by a suitably competent person. The same principle applies to commercial boilers, commercial gas pipework, and other non-domestic plant.

Dv Plumbing and Gas Services carries out commercial gas work only within a verified registered scope. Before any commercial gas visit is confirmed, we ensure that the attending engineer's Gas Safe registration and work categories are appropriate for your appliance type and premises. [EEAT NOTE FOR CLIENT: Insert named engineer details, Gas Safe registration number, and specific commercial work categories held on the engineer's ID card here. This section carries no weight without verifiable specifics — refer to gassaferegister.co.uk/gas-safety/the-gas-safe-id-card/the-gas-safe-id-card-categories/commercial/ for the complete category list before publishing.]

about .jpeg

What a Commercial Gas Service Visit Typically Involves

The scope of a commercial gas service visit is confirmed with you at enquiry — not assumed from a standard checklist. What follows describes the service elements we carry out within verified commercial competence. The exact combination depends on your appliance types, premises, and any specific concerns you've identified.

Commercial Boiler Servicing:
Commercial boiler gas service covers inspection of the heat exchanger, burner, controls, flue, and associated safety devices, followed by operational testing and a written service record. Commercial boilers vary significantly by capacity, configuration, and manufacturer — confirming the boiler type and any existing service history before the visit helps the engineer prepare appropriately.

Commercial Gas Appliance Inspection:
For non-boiler gas appliances on business premises — catering equipment, gas-fired heating plant, or other process equipment — a commercial gas equipment inspection assesses the appliance condition, the connection to the gas supply, ventilation arrangements, and safety device operation.

Commercial Gas Pipework Assessment:
A commercial gas pipework inspection examines accessible internal pipework for condition, security, and signs of deterioration. This is distinct from a gas tightness test, which is a specific pressure-based assessment of the pipework system — both may be relevant depending on the premises and the trigger for the visit.

Gas Tightness Testing:
Commercial gas tightness testing is a structured check of the gas supply system to confirm that there are no significant leaks in the pipework between the meter and the appliances. This is relevant both as part of planned maintenance and as an investigation step when an appliance fault or gas smell has been reported.

Commercial Catering Gas Equipment Servicing:
Commercial kitchen gas equipment service — covering catering ranges, ovens, fryers, grills, and associated interlocked ventilation — is carried out only where the attending engineer holds the relevant commercial catering gas work categories. The appliance type and kitchen ventilation arrangement are confirmed before any visit is booked. (Source: Gas Safe Register commercial catering guidance, gassaferegister.co.uk/gas-safety/gas-appliances/commercial-catering/. Last reviewed: 1 July 2026.)

Commercial Gas Safety Records and Documentation:
Following a commercial service visit, a commercial gas service report is issued documenting what was inspected, what was found, what was tested, and any identified issues requiring follow-up. This record is your evidence of what was done and when — relevant for due diligence, insurance purposes, and any subsequent maintenance planning. [EEAT NOTE FOR CLIENT: State only what the business genuinely issues. If a specific report format or template is used, describe it accurately here. Do not promise documentation that isn't actually produced.]

Scope note — what a commercial service visit does not include:
A planned service visit is not a fault-finding repair callout. Where a fault or deteriorated condition is identified during a service visit, this is documented and reported — it is not automatically repaired during the same visit unless the scope has been agreed in advance. Repairs are scoped, quoted, and authorised separately. If you have an existing fault or appliance failure requiring urgent attention, describe this when you contact us so we can scope the visit correctly from the start.

Before You Book — What to Check and What We Can Confirm

A commercial gas safety check from a company whose qualifications you haven't verified is worth significantly less than one where you've confirmed the engineer's registration and category coverage in advance. Here's what you should be asking any commercial gas company — and what Dv Plumbing and Gas Services can confirm.

Gas Safe Registration and Commercial Work Categories:
Every engineer carrying out gas work on your premises must be currently registered with the Gas Safe Register and must hold the specific commercial Gas Safe ID card categories relevant to your appliance type. You are entitled to ask to see the engineer's ID card before work begins — and to verify their registration directly at gassaferegister.co.uk. The categories on the front of the card tell you which appliance types the engineer is registered to work on. If the categories don't match your appliances, the work should not proceed.
[EEAT NOTE FOR CLIENT: Insert Gas Safe registration number and specific commercial work category codes held by each attending engineer here. This is the most important trust signal on the entire page. Do not publish without verified, current details.]

Commercial Gas Engineer Insurance:
DV Plumbing and Gas Services engineers carry current public liability insurance appropriate for commercial premises work. [EEAT NOTE FOR CLIENT: Insert insurance details — policy type, insurer, and coverage level — where approved for publication and currently valid.]

Service Records and Documentation:
Every commercial gas visit produces a commercial gas service report that documents the appliances inspected, the checks carried out, the readings and findings recorded, and any recommended follow-up actions. This record is issued to your business and is yours to retain. It is not an informal note — it is a documented record of what a qualified engineer found on your premises on a specific date. [EEAT NOTE FOR CLIENT: Describe the actual report format here — digital, paper, PDF, etc.]

A Note on "Commercial Gas Safety Certificates":
The requirement to hold a specific certificate varies by premises type, appliance, lease arrangement, and applicable duties. We do not present a universal commercial gas safety certificate as an automatic legal requirement for every business — the picture is more nuanced than that, and we'll give you a straight answer about what applies to your situation rather than a one-size-fits-all claim. Where records and compliance documentation are relevant, they form part of the visit output. For the relevant legal context, refer to HSE guidance at hse.gov.uk/gas  and the Gas Safe Register's guidance on gas safety certificates and records at gassaferegister.co.uk/gas-safety/gas-safety-certificates-records/ .

40+ Years of Combined Experience:
Dv Plumbing and Gas Services is a family-run business with over 40 years of combined experience across domestic and commercial gas and plumbing work. Commercial gas servicing is not an extension of a domestic practice — it requires verified competence for the relevant appliance types and premises, and that competence is what we confirm before accepting any commercial booking.

Planned Maintenance — The Commercial Gas Argument

The HSE's guidance on gas safety in catering and hospitality is clear that employers are responsible for ensuring gas-fired equipment used at work is properly maintained and inspected by a suitably competent engineer. (Source: HSE CAIS23 — Gas safety in catering and hospitality, hse.gov.uk/pubns/cais23.htm. Last reviewed: 1 July 2026.)

  • What planned maintenance actually does: A scheduled commercial gas maintenance visit is not a compliance box-ticking exercise — it's the mechanism by which the current condition of your appliances is established. An engineer who services a commercial catering range annually finds and reports small issues — a failing thermocouple, a pilot assembly showing wear, a slight change in burner behaviour — before they develop into an appliance failure or a safety concern. An appliance that hasn't been looked at for three years may have developed several of those issues simultaneously.

  • Downtime, operational risk, and maintenance planning:
We won't promise that planned maintenance eliminates appliance failure — no service can do that honestly. What it does is reduce the likelihood that a fault develops undetected, and it gives your business a documented maintenance history that is useful in any conversation with your insurer, your premises management team, or your due diligence process. The frequency of visits is determined by your appliance type, manufacturer guidance, premises activity level, and the recommendation of the qualified engineer — not a universal interval that applies regardless of circumstances.

[EEAT NOTE FOR CLIENT: Describe the actual maintenance programme the business offers here — what a planned maintenance arrangement involves, how it is structured, and what documentation is produced. Only publish if the business genuinely offers planned maintenance contracts.]

The Types of Business Premises We Service

[EEAT NOTE FOR CLIENT: The following sector cards describe the types of premises Dv Plumbing and Gas Services is qualified and experienced to work on. Before publishing, confirm which sectors the business has genuinely served and remove or adjust any that are not within the verified scope. Do not claim sector experience without actual project evidence.]

01

Hospitality and Catering Premises

Restaurants, pubs, hotels, and catering operations with gas-fired kitchen equipment are among the most technical commercial gas environments — because the combination of high-intensity cooking appliances, catering ventilation systems, and commercial gas interlock requirements demands verified specialist competence, not a generalist visit. We work with hospitality operators across Portsmouth and the South Coast, where our engineers hold the relevant commercial catering gas work categories.

02

Care Homes and Residential Care Premises

Care homes and similar premises with communal gas appliances — commercial boilers, commercial kitchen equipment, or centralised heating systems — need service visits carried out with an understanding of the setting, the occupancy, and the importance of minimising disruption to resident routine. Commercial gas maintenance for care premises is coordinated around operational needs and documented clearly for the responsible manager.

03

Property Management and Facilities Management

Property managers and facilities teams responsible for multiple commercial units, office buildings, or mixed-use premises often need a commercial gas contractor relationship rather than a one-off visit — someone who understands how to coordinate across multiple sites, work within procurement processes, and issue documentation in a format that fits their reporting requirements. Contact us to discuss how commercial maintenance visits would work within your management structure.

04

Retail and Office Premises

Retail units, office buildings, and other business premises with gas-fired heating plants often go longest without a service visit — because the appliances aren't the core of the business operation and the maintenance process gets deprioritised. Office commercial gas maintenance and retail unit commercial gas engineer visits are straightforward in scope — but they need to be done by someone registered for commercial work, not a domestic engineer working outside their qualification category.

How Commercial Gas Quotes Work — and Why We Don't Publish Fixed Prices

01

Why isn't there a price list on this page?

A commercial gas service cost depends on factors that are specific to your premises and appliances — the number and type of appliances, the access arrangements, the age and service history of the equipment, the documentation you need, and whether the visit is a routine annual service, a first-time inspection of poorly documented plant, or a targeted assessment of a specific concern. Publishing a price before knowing any of these details would produce a number that is either far too high or far too low — neither of which helps you budget accurately.

02

What does a commercial gas quote include?

When you contact us with the information described in Step 1 of the process section above — premises type, appliance list, location, operational constraints, and any current concerns — we produce a scoped quote covering: engineer attendance, the specific appliances to be serviced, the checks and documentation included in the visit, and whether any preliminary site information is needed before the quote can be finalised. The quote is scope-based. If the scope changes during the visit because of a condition identified on arrival, we discuss it before proceeding.

03

When is a site visit needed before a quote can be given?

For complex commercial premises — multiple appliances, unusual access arrangements, ageing or poorly documented plant, or a hospitality kitchen with a full catering installation — a brief preliminary site assessment may produce a more accurate quote than a phone-based scoping conversation. We'll tell you honestly if this applies to your situation and discuss whether it makes sense before you commit to anything.

04

What happens if additional work is needed during the visit?

If the engineer identifies a condition during the service that requires repair, investigation, or component replacement, a commercial gas repair quote is produced separately, explained clearly, and authorised by you before any additional work proceeds. Nothing is carried out and billed retroactively. The service fee and the repair fee are separate items.
